The innovative Wave Hub, situated just 16km off the Cornish Coast at Hayle, hopes to attract inventive developers to test out their wave energy converters at their specially designed site.

The first confirmed customer is Ocean Power Technologies (OPT), who are planning on deploying their PowerBuoy technology, to test their wave energy converter array. This array, totalling up to 5MW will be phased over several years.

This Wave Hub provides a connection to the onshore electricity grid, and provides a convening testing place for developers as it simplifies the legal consents process. The Wave Hub looks set to provide services for between 10 and 25 years. During this time, it will help establish the region as a leader in Tidal and Marine Renewable Energy.

The UK has an ideal position for harnessing wave and tidal energy resources, with wave energy potentially able to generate enough energy to meet one sixth of the UK’s energy needs. The Wave Hub is supported by the South West RDA, who are keen to encourage the development of the marine energy industry in the region and support the potential that this project brings.
